"Must have" accessories

Puncture repair kit

The obvious puncture repair kit - look at the “rub on” non glue patches for quick, clean and convenient repairs. Consider carrying a spare tube – in case of major damage!

How much? $2.50 - $8.95

Bicycle pump

Even more obvious but often forgotten is the pump! Now more than ever, these are available in sizes defying belief! So don’t be caught without one!

How much? $12.95 - $129.95

Puncture prevention

They say prevention is better than cure – invest in puncture prevention. You can choose from “thorn proof” tubes which are simply constructed using a thicker rubber to resist punctures. The better alternative is “tyre liners”. These are highly successful in protecting your tubes by deflecting sharp debris. They are a hard plastic strip which lies between the tube and tyre and can be reused over and again.

How much? $11.95 thorn proof tube $19.95 - $24.95 tire liners.

What type of lights are best?

Lights – cycling safety is paramount so adequate lighting is a necessity. A bright, flashing (strobe or LED) red rear light and similar white front light is the bare minimum. Rechargeable halogen headlights will allow you safe passage on virtually any surface.

Simply tell us how often, how long and where you ride at night and we can suggest the lighting system to suit you. For instance, if you predominantly ride on the road in well lit areas, a simple flashing/steady front LED and red rear LED set up will suffice ($40 - $200)

On the other hand, you may commute regularly through poorly lit or even treacherous conditions requiring substantial illumination – for this you’ll require heavy duty power from rechargeable batteries and high wattage globes around 10 is good – 20 watts simulates daylight! We like the Niteflux range which come in variety of power outputs and all the accessories you’ll need to hit the road. Prices start at $159

How much? $14.95 - $99.95 Rear, $14.95 - $329.00 Front

Bike locks

Securing your investment is very important – here you have a choice – braided cable locks or U locks. Braided cables offer the flexibility of up to 6ft length and come in various diameters – a 15mm cable will withstand considerable attacks whereas an 8mm will be defeated easily.

We like the Specialized “Hard Rapper” which features a Kevlar internal core making it the ultimate in cable locks. Favored by bike couriers are the “U” lock – these are solid hardened steel and offer exceptional security. Being solid steel, they are ideally suited to inner city or other high security applications.

How much? $19.95 - $89.95 for cable $29.95 - $179.95 for U locks.

Trip computer

A trip computer is a must for those of us wishing to improve our endurance. Trip computers can show your current speed, distance travelled, average speed and even calories burned. Models are now available with heart rate monitors for goal orientated and focused training. At Fleet we recommend the Cateye range which caters to all levels and offer great user friendly innovative models such as their digital cordless range starting at just $99.95.

How much? $29.95 all the way to $650 with heart rate!

Tools

Tools for bikes are very specific and without them, you may be stuck with a very simple problem. The word in bike tools is compact – in fact some of these units could double as a key ring! They offer everything from tyre levers and hex keys, to chain breakers and spoke tools. Tools vary in price and quality and whilst top of the range isn’t necessary it’s imperative to have at least a basic one.

How much? $24.95 - $139.95

Saddle bags

A saddle bag will come in handy when you least expect it. They're great for carrying mobiles, change, tools, tubes etc and they can be easily removed when leaving your bike. Saddle bags come in a range of colours to match your new bike.

How much? $24.95 - $69.95
